Green Day

Since the release of American Idiot in September 2004, this album has struck a chord with fans and critics alike. We haven’t seen a punk album this politically charged in quite some time. The single for “Wake Me Up When September Ends” takes a different turn. This song was written about the death of singer/guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong’s father when Billie Joe was very young. The video however, deals with a different type of loss

The video for “Wake Me Up When September Ends“ shows us the life of a teenage boy, played by Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot), and his girlfriend, played by Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen). We see the couple going through their day to day life in their small town home and the boy’s eighteenth birthday party. The video takes a dramatic turn when Bell decides to enlist in the military. Wood’s character is pleading with him not to go, and he retaliates by telling her that he’s doing it for them, for their future. The video ends with Wood’s character sitting at home, crying, waiting for his return, while we are shown shots of Bell in combat. The video is in no way an anti-war message. Rather it shows how many young people today are lacking choices and are more or less forced into a life that they wouldn’t have chosen for themselves. -Ronnie Tuchman

Adam Richman

If you haven’t heard the music, there’s a good chance you’ve seen his concert posters around. A voracious touring artist with a team behind him that works almost as hard as himself, Adam Richman is everywhere; and deservingly so. Barely in his twenties and already flaunting the brilliant, self produced indie pop masterpiece, Patience and Science. The Or Music release, on which Richman plays all the instruments, boasts song after song of honest songwriting and an inherent ear for radio ready rock tunes. “The Lonliness Song” is no exception.

The video finds our hero spending his day fulfilling the needs, wants, and wishes of each new person he comes across, but failing to ever actualize his own; so sad. Featuring beautiful illustrations (interspersed with performance shots of the Mohawk clad balladeer) and creative direction, “The Lonliness Song” is a perfect example where Richman’s dedication to songwriting and creative chord changes/voicings doesn’t step on his complete accessibility. Musicians, music lovers and Gen-Y teeny boppers may have finally found a common ground.-James Wells

Video: “Fix You“

Director:Sophie Muller

Coldplay

Chris Martin knows how to craft a pop song. End of story. Whatever images a director puts over the soundtrack of whatever obvious hit, Sony has chosen as a single, won’t really matter…as long as Chris Martin can walk towards and sing into a camera. The non-chalant brilliance of this and many other very similar Coldplay videos, is that Mr. Martin doesn’t need much of a story line or directorial wizardry to captivate audiences. He has already supplied a tune that is instantly memorable, not terribly challenging but beautiful in its simplicity.

In “Fix You” we find our bleary eyed Romeo, walking in slow motion through abandoned streets, ever so unaffected by passing cars, and even his own charmingly romantic falsetto. Somewhat anticlimactic in nature, the video does however end with the video seamlessly flowing into a touching and flawless live performance. With thousands wrapped around his finger, Mr. Martin wishes the crowd a fond farewell and thanks them from the bottom of his heart, and I believe him.-James Wells

Video: “Just The Girl“

Click Five

Move over Ashley Simpson and boy toy Ryan Cabrerra, middle American teenagers have found a new way to spend their allowance. With super-produced melodies, harmonies and arrangements, matching suits, and the best hair since the Fab Four, The Click Five have a great new record, Greetings From Imrie House, brought to you direct from the folks at Atlantic. The video for their first single “Just the Girl” is a mini-movie direct from post Can’t Hardly Wait world and features none other than Christopher Knight (Peter Brady) as the villainous and oppressive Literature teacher. Luckily, The Click Five chopper lands on the school rooftop and plays a power house set for the student body, liberating them from the binds of educational tedium.

Featuring quick shots, dancing school girls, digital transitions, hand holding, and a bass/snare “Pour Some Sugar On Me” like breakdown, “Just The Girl” may just very well be the way to get kids into half-stacks and falsettos once again. -James Wells
