Artist: Regina Spektor

Video: “Us“

Director: Adria Petty

Regina Spektor

Regina Spektor continues to be one of the most compelling artists in music today. Always opting away from ordinary and intriguing us rather with the beauty of her voice and the complexity of her arrangements. With Soviet Kitsch, the Moscow native’s third release, we see a compilation of some of most honest and thoughtful compositions of this year. Reminiscent of a Joanna Newsome, Emiliana Torrini or Bjork, “Us” is proclamation of the monumental achievement of finding love.

We needn’t tell you the video is incredible. What would you expect from Ms. Spektor? With a stop/start motion animation, the video features Regina creating a miniature city with the help of some unknown wizardry. All the while brilliant direction draws the viewer in and never lets go. We watch as Regina enters the odd city which she has created, we watch as she delicately plays a collapsible oversized key piano, we watch and watch. Visually, the video for “Us” is as stunning as the artist who inspired it. . -James Wells

Artist: Kaiser Chiefs

Video: “Oh My God“

Director: Charlie Paul

Kaiser Chiefs

Following the success of one of the hookiest singles of 2005, “I Predict a Riot“, Brit exports Kaiser Chiefs are back with another piece of dance/rock bliss with “Oh My God“. With a verse that may never escape from the space between your ears, complete with the wittiest and campiest of lyrics, “work in a shirt with your name tag on it, drifting apart like a plate tectonic“, the video for “Oh My God“ find itself equally as fun, random and unprovoked.

The band, who consequently could be the illegitimate love children of Brandon Flowers and The Monkees, starts this strange journey as workers in a toy factory, building and setting up child size instruments for their graveyard-shift inspired concert. Just as soon as the chorus comes charging in, we find the Chiefs in a world-wide tour, stopping everywhere from an Arctic ice floe to a Near East opium den to a Buddhist temple then to a flat in Paris. Each time, the video grows more and more random with the introduction of new places, faces, and scenarios. Eventually culminating with the inclusion of shaky illustrations and sketches, the clip certainly fits with this quirky, yet loveable band. . -James Wells

Artist: All American Rejects

Video: “Dirty Little Secret“

Director:Marcos Siega

All American Rejects

Oklahoma has never had such dynamic pop rockers, and we have never been so eager to hear the concise and poppy works of Tyson Ritter and friends. The much anticipated sophomore record Move Along (although not produced by the brilliant Tim O’Heir) is filled with huge guitars and drums and certainly isn’t lacking in hooks. The lead off single “Dirty Little Secret”, although seemingly lighthearted, carries an emotional weight that deserves an equally dynamic video.

AAR and director Marcos Sierga indulged the rockers within and filmed a fairly simple performance piece, but with a twist. Indiscretions and the dirtiest secrets from anonymous youth are scribbled on 5x7 cards that look like they were made in art class. The secrets range from “I fear that I have an undiagnosed mental illness” to “I like the smell of my own poop” to “I only love 2 of my 3 children”. Its this kind of overdramatic/childish presentation that has made the Rejects such a presence and such a likeable group for fans of pop/rock/emo/alt. -James Wells

Artist:Morningwood

Video: “Jetsetter“

Director:wormseye

Morningwood

In the NYC foursome, Morningwood, the music community has a sexy new arena-rock star. Her name is Chantal Claret. A playful, busty lady with more energy than Justin Hawkins, Claret has a grasp of indie rock sincerity as well as the swagger and attitude of Mick Jagger and Robert Plant. The video for “Jettsetter” is a fun filled voyage tracing the story of a successful touring band, complete with personal jets, indecent exposure, jail time, and later, redemption.

Irreverant as the day is long, Claret and the boys slam through the tune flanked at all times by choreographed dancers and stunningly colorful sets. More Buck Cherry than David Bowie, less The Darkness than The Breeders. Morningwood rocks. The video rocks. The tune rocks. This is rock and roll.-James Wells
